What RTP means, and why the same slot pays differently at different casinos

RTP is return to player: the share of all money wagered that the game pays back over millions of spins. A 96.50% slot keeps €35 of every €1,000 wagered. That is the whole definition. Everything else is about what it does not mean.

Quick answer. RTP is an average over millions of spins, set by the provider per game setting. Casinos choose a setting. Check the game's help screen; our slot pages list which casinos run which setting.

Why one slot has several RTPs

Most providers ship a game with two to four certified maths settings. Pragmatic Play's Gates of Olympus exists at 96.50%, 95.50% and 94.50%. Play'n GO's Book of Dead goes as low as 84.21%. The casino picks one when it integrates the game, and nothing on the lobby tile tells you which. The help screen inside the game does.

How to check

  1. Open the game at the casino, in demo if available.
  2. Open the information or help panel (the "i" or "?" icon).
  3. Find "RTP" or "theoretical return". That number is the setting that casino runs.
  4. Compare with the provider's maximum on our slot page.

Why volatility matters more in one session

RTP tells you the long-run cost. Volatility tells you the shape of a session. A 96% low-volatility slot like Starburst gives many small wins and a slow drain. A 96% high-volatility slot like Gates of Olympus gives long dry runs and rare big hits. Over 10,000 spins they cost the same; over 200 spins they feel nothing alike.

What RTP is not

  • Not a session promise. 96.5% does not mean you get €96.50 back from €100.
  • Not adjustable mid-session. The casino cannot "turn it down" when you are winning.
  • Not the same as hit frequency. A game can pay often and still have a low RTP.

Questions people ask

Is a 96% slot better than a 94% one?

Over a long time, yes: you lose €40 per €1,000 wagered instead of €60. In a single session the difference is invisible; variance dominates.

Can a casino change a slot's RTP?

It can choose among the settings the provider ships, typically two to four. It cannot set an arbitrary value. The chosen setting is shown in the game's help screen.

Does RTP reset or change during a session?

No. RTP is a property of the game's maths, fixed per setting. Hot and cold streaks are variance, not a changing RTP.
